Partenope is the woman who bears the name of her city. Siren or myth? In Greek myth, Parthenope is a siren who committed suicide after failing to charm Odysseus. Her body was carried by the tide to the place where the Castel dell’Ovo is now built, giving the name to the city that would later become Naples. At first I was annoyed and was sure I wouldn’t make it to the end, but then the scene with the aging star caught my attention. At this point I realized that the film is not about the beauty of some mythical siren, but about the beauty she sees in people beyond appearances. No, Partenope demonstrates her superpowers throughout her life, and examples abound: when she reads John Cheever, the alcoholic, the depressed, the prodigy; when she passionately kisses the disfigured actress… And since she is the personification of Naples, the human imperfections she makes transparent are connected to the history of the city – ignorance and misery, patriarchal oppression, facade religiosity and superstition, violence. All this is shown in the most brutal, horrific scenes, but in Parthenope those who embody them find understanding and acceptance, and become miracles. However, 8 out of 10 because it feels a little pretentious. You can’t be arrogant when you preach embracing every soul.
