Hugh Jackman has stated that he was truly done playing the character of Wolverine after Logan (2017)

Plot

Deadpool is offered a place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe by the Time Variance Authority, but instead recruits a variant of Wolverine to save his universe from extinction. He later stated that he regretted this statement after watching the first Deadpool film and expressed to Ryan his interest in seeing the two characters meet on the big screen. When asked why he decided to return to the film, he simply replied, “I just wanted to do it and I felt it in my heart,” adding that he wanted to have the best time possible on set with Ryan Reynolds. Similarly, Reynolds had wanted to work alongside Jackman since the first Deadpool film and was saddened when he (Jackman) stepped away from the role. As Wolverine and Deadpool continue their odyssey in the Honda Odyssey, the clock on the car advances three hours as they speak.

Elliot Chipman: That’s Deadpool. Kevin Chipman: That’s Wolverine. Fox killed him. Disney brought him back. They’ll make him do this until he’s 90.

There’s a temptation these days for movies that aren’t perfect to be seen as disappointments, and I hope that’s not the case here. The film aims to strike a balance between being accessible to casual viewers and pleasing die-hard fans of the character. However, the film also faces the challenge of navigating the intricate and complex web of continuity that exists in the Marvel Universe. With nearly 50 (!) films in its continuity (not counting TV shows and Sony movies), the Deadpool and Wolverine movie had to carefully thread the needle to ensure it honored established history while delivering a fresh and engaging story. Despite the potential baggage of its vast continuity, Deadpool and Wolverine works on its own.
