After a shipwreck, an intelligent robot named Roz is stranded on an uninhabited island

To survive in the harsh environment, Roz befriends the island’s animals and takes care of an orphaned baby goose. Lupita Nyong’o talks to screenwriter and director Chris Sanders about key roles and their time together making “The Wild Robot.” According to writer Peter Brown, the inspiration for “The Wild Robot” came from a sketch he made of a robot in a tree. He then asked the question, “What would an intelligent robot do in the wild?” As the fox enters the cabin, a moose grunts near the door, but the sound effect used is a recording of a bear. Roz: [from the trailer] Sometimes you have to become more than you were programmed to be in order to survive.

After directing an adaptation of Jack London’s classic The Call of the Wild, Sanders adapted a bestselling novel by Peter Brown called The Wild Robot, a heartwarming, emotional and tear-jerking sci-fi drama about a robot named Roz who is stranded on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the environment and take on the responsibility of adopting a young orphaned gosling named Brightbill. Along with longtime collaborator and executive producer Dean DeBois and producer Jeff Hermann, Sanders teamed up with Dreamworks Animation, the studio that produced Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken, to create this groundbreaking animated masterpiece. Featuring Oscar winner Lupita Nyongo in the lead role as Roz, an all-star cast of voices, groundbreaking animation and a heartwarming story that brings the literary phenomenon to life. The visual storytelling was influenced by films such as James Cameron’s Avatar films, Brad Bird’s Iron Man and The Last Man, Giant, Zemieck’s Cast Away, and Kirk DeMicco and Faryn Pearl Ruby Gillman’s Teenage Kraken, while the emotional, character-driven acting was also influenced by films such as My Sister’s Keeper, Tony Goldwyn’s The Last Kiss, Nigel Cole’s A Lot Like Love, and R.

J. Sanders and the film’s Head of Story, Heidi Jo Gilbert, had crafted a beautiful and heartwarming script and story that explored the emotional relationship between Roz and Brightbill and struck a more serious tone than any animated film had ever struck before. The voice cast was amazingly well chosen: Lupita as Roz, newcomer and British star Kit Connor as Brightbill, Pedro Pascal as Flick, voice acting legend Mark Hamill as Thorn the bear, Catherine O’Hara as Pinktail, British star Matt Berry as Paddler, Bill Nighy as Longneck, Stephanie Hsu as Vontra and Ving Rhames as Thunderbird The Falcon (a brand new character created for the film) give their best performances that could make this film a potential Oscar favorite for Best Animated Feature. Sanders had assembled a team of animators, artists and VFX designers to create a revolutionary and groundbreaking style influenced by some of the recent innovations in feature animation, using stylized 2D/3D hybrid looks to bring Roz and the world of The Wild Robot to life.
