Plot

Angelina Jolie and director Pablo Larraín discuss how they connected to the heartbreaking true story of Maria Callas, the world’s greatest opera singer. Aristotle Onassis, Maria Callas’ longtime companion, later married former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Kennedy was the subject of Pablo Larraín’s earlier biopic, “Jackie,” in 2016, starring Natalie Portman.

I just saw the film at a film festival

Referenced in Close-Up: Why Do We Need a Venice Film Festival? (2024). Our entire group was disappointed with what we saw.

I get it – Angelina is gorgeous, but where was the spark?

The story was thin, focused on the last part of her life, and major parts of the history surrounding the events were left out. We would jump from one scene to the next with no clear connection between the sequences. The focus seemed to be on Jolie posing for us, quite a distance from the charm of the real Maria.

This version of Maria Callas was hollow

I never felt connected to the characters and I didn’t feel bought into the film. At the end of the film, as well as the closing credits, there are scenes of the real Maria Callas – full of personality and charisma – who unfortunately is not shown in Jolie’s performance. Beautiful costumes but that was it for me.
