Returning to Saint-Martial for the funeral of his late boss, Jeremy’s stay with the widowed Martine is intertwined with the disappearance, the dark intentions of a threatening neighbor, and a priest. The film was widely expected to be in the official competition of the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, but instead was entered in the Cannes Premiere section. Mercy takes its time to roll and when it does, it doesn’t stop laughing until it reaches its climax in the final shot. With very subtle humor sprinkled throughout the film, it tells the story of a quiet man who travels to a village to attend a teacher’s funeral. There, he meets his mentor’s wife, his son, and a priest, all of whom seem to be saying something different than what they have in mind. What I love about Misericordia is how he suddenly changes his writing to make the viewer laugh. It reminded me of Deerskin (2019) and The Bra (2018). (See it at the 2024 MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.)
